Our Responsorial Psalm at daily Mass on Wednesday (August 28) was Psalm 139, which reads in part:
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I sink to the nether world, you are present there.
Sooo…God is in the nether world, i.e., hell? Really? Interesting. Similarly, our Apostles’ Creed states that Jesus:
…was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell
on the third day he rose again from the dead…”
Sooo…Jesus went to hell and left, and can do so again? This is good news! This means that, even after death, we are NEVER beyond God’s justice, mercy, and saving grace; that Jesus can still save us, even in hell. This is stated very well in Catechism entry number 2283:
We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.
Let us pray for the souls in purgatory, give thanks to God always, and BE NOT AFRAID!
