I am currently taking Fr. Coady’s ITV class “Worship & Faith.” The required text is Liturgy and the New Evangelization: Practicing the Art of Self-Giving Love by Timothy P O’Malley. (I LOVE that subtitle!) In this class, and in many of his homilies, Fr. Coady makes reference to the laying down of life by each person of the Trinity for the other two. Our God calls us to do the same—to give ourselves back to him by offering ourselves in service to one another.
Liturgy is about self-offering. Christ, the Head, call us, the Body, to gather together. We respond to his call by coming to Mass. As we participate in Mass, we offer/lay our entire lives on the altar and join our sacrifice with Christ’s. We are in communion with God and in communion with one another.
In that same Spirit, we have the opportunity at each liturgy to offer our gifts and join them with the gifts of others. That may be as a member of the assembly, singing and praying along side those around us…very important. Or God may be calling us to be an usher, a lector, an extraordinary minister of communion, a server, a musician. We need Liturgical Ministers at each Mass to assist the Holy Spirit in creating a life-giving celebration.
On this Stewardship Weekend, please consider the possibility that God may be calling you to offer your self to a particular liturgical ministry. Please pray for those participating in the Liturgical Training taking place at 1:00 p.m. this Sunday. May each of us open ourselves at every liturgy so that we may be transformed into Christ and share in his divine life.
